Episode 3

FIRST DAY IN THE SUPERMARKET
LA FAMIGLIA WEST
Terza puntata

PRIMO GIORNO AL SUPERMERCATO

Cathy

(In the supermarket)
Good morning Mr. Khan. Reporting for duty!

(Dentro al supermercato)
Buongiorno signor Khan. Sono qui pronta a prendere servizio!

Mr.
Khan

Oh, good morning Mrs. West. I’m so glad you’re here. My daughter usually substitutes me in the mornings for a couple of hours but she had to go to the doctor’s1 today, so I’m minding2 her little boy.

Ah, buongiorno signora West.

2 Minding.

Little Boy of three Un bambinetto di tre anni:

Hello. Would you like to meet1 Ben, my teddy?
(He holds up a white teddy-bear nearly
2 as large as himself3).

Ciao.

1 Would you like to meet= letteralmente, "ti piacerebbe incontrare..."
2 Nearly.
3 As large as himself.
Letteralmente: "come grande come lui stesso" ossia "grande quanto lui". Altro esempio di questa costruzione: she is as tall as Mr. Brown (lei è alta come Mr. Brown)

Cathy

Yes love. I would.1

Sì caro, volentieri.1

1 Yes love. I would. Traduzione letterale: "Sì amore. Mi piacerebbe." I would sta per I would like to meet Ben. Altro esempio: Would you like to have a drink of water? (vuoi bere un goccio d'acqua?). Risposta: Yes, I would (sottinteso: like to have a drink of water).

Mr.
Khan

I believe1 you used to work in a supermarket before2?

1 I believe.
2 You used to work in a supermarket before.
b) used to... serve a costruire l'imperfetto italiano. Per cui used to work significa in realtà "lavorava"

Cathy

Yes, my father’s1 , in Peckham. Mum and Dad managed to buy a small place when they came over from Jamaica.

1 My father's

Mr.
Khan

So you grew up in it?

Quindi lei è praticamente cresciuta in un negozio?

Cathy

Yes I did. We used to sell West Indian specialities.

Sì. Vendevamo le specialità delle Indie Occidentali.

Mr.
Khan
Well I hope you like our Indian specialities. We’ve got a bit of everything here. Now I must go and have my breakfast – my wife is preparing it. See you later!

Jade

(In the supermarket that afternoon)
I read your note on the door telling us to come here. Aren’t you coming home now?

Cathy

You’ll just have to wait a bit for your tea. Mr. Khan had to go out at half past twelve and asked me to stay a bit longer today.

Jade

Oh Mum! Your first day here! You told us you’d be here only four hours in the mornings – and it’s four o’clock now!

Cathy

Well, Mr. Khan is very kind and we need the money Jade. Here’s the key - just let yourselves in and begin doing your homework! If you want something to eat there’ s still some jam tart left! Go on!

Su!

Woman customer

Have you got some frozen vegetarian Indian dishes?

Cathy

Yes, indeed we have – look - over there on the right!

Sì, certo, ne abbiamo - guardi - laggiù sulla destra!

Male customer:

I can’t find the chutney anywhere!

Cathy

Just follow me sir. It’s a bit high up on the shelf in the corner.

Mi segua! È un po' in alto sullo scaffale d'angolo.

Mr.
Khan

(returning)
Hello again Mrs. West. Everything OK? Sorry I was so long.

(ritornando)
Di nuovo buongiorno, signora West. Tutto bene?

Cathy
Don’t worry! Now I really must rush off home to the children. Goodbye – see you tomorrow morning! Oh, I’ve forgotten to buy some cocoa! Both my kids drink a cup before going to bed! Non si preoccupi! Adesso però devo davvero correre a casa dai miei ragazzi. Buona serata e arrivederci a domani mattina!
