History
According to Steve Turner's book A Hard Day's Write, it is one of the only songs for which McCartney wrote the lyrics before the music, as it was allegedly conceived as a poem while the Beatle was shaving. The song discusses McCartney's love for girlfriend Jane Asher and his thoughts of her while away. McCartney had met Asher earlier that year, and would remain in a romantic relationship with her for the majority of his career with The Beatles. It is best known for being the band's opening number on their famous US debut performance on The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964.
It is included on other Beatles albums as well: Anthology 1, Live At The BBC, and The Beatles 1962-1966. The song has been covered by Helloween, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Los Manolos (for the 1992 Summer Olympics), and Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, on their 1964 album South of the Border, among others.
The Beatles recorded the song on July 30, 1963 in 11 takes with 3 overdubs. The master take was take 14 overdubbed on take 11. It was remixed on August 21 and October 29.
An instumental version of this song appears in the movie Magical Mystery Tour.
Reportedly, this song was playing over the soundsystem in the hospital John Lennon was in at the time of his death. [1]
