Babylon is a single-click translation utility and also information source tool.
The program works with help of an OCR agent. When a user clicks on text with the right mouse button or combination of it and another key, the Babylon window appears and translates the clicked word or describes it. It is a very convenient and fast way for translating, converting values and getting general information from everywhere in the Web.
Babylon gained its enormous popularity and widespread use from hundreds of glossaries provided for free by users. In exchange for their efforts making free glossaries, the users receive a free yearly license of the Babylon software.
Currently there are more than 25 dictionaries available for Babylon. While the most popular ones (English-English, English-German, English-French, English-Spanish) appear to have an enormous vocabulary, some dictionaries for other languages are far from complete.
Additional information comes from various dictionaries that are produced by a community of users. Babylon offers community-made dictionaries about technical terms, jokes, and acronyms, as well as the English and various international editions of Wikipedia.
In addition to the dictionaries Babylon offers with no additional charge, it offers premium content for an additional cost, such as Encyclopๆdia Britannica, Oxford English Dictionary and Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary.
The program's latest release (version 6) also integrates full text translation in 17 languages. Also part of the software is Microsoft's Text-to-speech agent, which allows the user to hear the proper pronunciation of words.
Babylon is produced by an Israeli company named Babylon, which is a branch of Formula. There are 30 million registered users around the world. [citation needed] The company started its production in 1997 and was offering Babylon Translator as unlimited free trial (practically for free) until 2001, gaining a huge success by its offer. Then it started to charge for it, and as of February 2006 Babylon's price is $49.50 (purchase) or $24.50 (annual subscription).
