The Canadian Oxford Dictionary, published by
the
Oxford University Press
Canada, was first released in
1998
and quickly became the standard dictionary reference for
Canadian English. Oxford maintains a permanent staff of
lexicographers in Canada, led by editor
Katherine Barber.
The Canadian
Oxford Dictionary second edition contains 300,000
entries, including about 2,200 true
Canadianisms. It also provides information on Canadian
pronunciation and on Canadian spelling, which has features of
both
British and
American spellings (colour, centre, and
travelling, but: tire, aluminum, and
program). The second, updated edition of the dictionary was
published in 2004.
It is used by most major Canadian newspapers, publishing
houses and the government of Canada. The influential
Canadian Press Stylebook follows the Canadian Oxford
Dictionary. The
dictionary was a publishing success, staying on Canadian
bestseller lists for over a year, something quite unusual for a
reference book.
However, in their
2004
reprint, they renamed the dictionary to Oxford Canadian
Dictionary. (refer to second Reference below)
Other Canadian English dictionaries
Two other major Canadian English dictionaries are the
ITP Nelson Canadian Dictionary and the
Gage Canadian Dictionary.
