dictionary of
English words and phrases that originated in the
United States. The Dictionary was edited by
Mitford Mathews and was published in
1951
by University of Chicago Press.
The work should not be confused with
John Russell Bartlett's work, Dictionary of Americanisms:
A Glossary of Words and Phrases, Usually Regarded as Peculiar to
the United States, first published in
1848.
